Digital image capture from the slit lamp biomicroscope

The “slit lamp” biomicroscope allows the examiner to look at the inside or outside of the eye, using both eyes (“binocular”)  resulting in a good appreciation of depth and height (“stereopsis”). The “slit lamp” refers to a highly focused light source that allows an precise illumination of what is being viewed. Some form of this instrument has been used in eye care for over 100 years. What’s new, is the ability to digitally capture the image and store it in the computer. The image can than be emailed to another doctor for consultation and referred to during future examinations to better evaluate for change.
